Cocktail Night
What to wear · Occasion guide
Cocktail Nightsharp, dark, and quiet
A cocktail evening is the most western night of the wedding week, and the one where fit matters more than anything else. There is no embroidery to hide behind here. A shoulder that sits right and a trouser that breaks cleanly on the shoe is the whole outfit — everything else is just colour.
The brief
Wear this
A tuxedo, a bandhgala tuxedo if you want something more Indian, or a clean indo western in a dark tone. Satin or grosgrain lapel, slim trouser, no extra detail.
Fabric
Wool blend, velvet, textured jacquard, satin-faced lapel. Velvet is the one place you can add richness without adding any embroidery.
Finish it with
Patent or polished black shoes, a bow tie or a slim tie, cufflinks, pocket square. Match the belt to the shoe or skip the belt altogether.

Worth knowing
- Spend the extra fitting on the shoulder and the sleeve length — that is what people read
- Velvet in a dark tone photographs richer than plain wool under indoor light
- An ivory dinner jacket with black trousers is the one safe way to stand out
- Show about a centimetre of shirt cuff below the jacket sleeve
- Mojari or kolhapuris — wrong register for this evening
- Bright prints and loud colour — save them for the daytime functions
- A loose or boxy fit — there is no embroidery here to distract from it
- A full ceremonial dupatta over a tuxedo — pick one language and stay in it
Tell us the date and the venue. A hotel ballroom and a terrace bar call for different weights, and a tuxedo needs two fittings — so come in early. Out of town? Book a video call and we will show you the pieces live.
